Overweight - Husse Feeding Guide

Start at puppy time!
Don't leave food out all the time. Feed VALP three times per day as per the recommended rates. Weigh weekly and alter the feed rate and lower the feed frequency to twice/day as the pup grows. Change to VALP Maxi for larger or giant breeds after 12-16 weeks. Feeding at the same time as the family eats helps bonding.
Use a Husse measuring cup.  Excessive feeding during puppy stage can lead to adult obesity and related illnesses.  Overweight dogs are prone to diabetes, so puppy hood is a good time to start a healthy diet. Worm your pup every 2 to 3 weeks - 90% of pups have worms.

Is your Dog Overweight or Obese?
You should be able to clearly see and feel the waist in your dog just ahead of the hip joints.
If the body extends past the hips, your dog is overweight.  If a dog is more than 15% over its ideal weight it is obese.

Reducing the weight of an OVERWEIGHT Dog
Feed normal maintenance food (Prima or Prima Plus etc.) at a rate of 80% of target weight. Ask your Vet to give you a target weight, or consult your breed website.  Do not allow your dog to lose more than 3% of its body weight in any week.
As the dog approaches target weight (5% over), feed to 90% and when at target weight feed to 100%. Consider using a food with less protein and lower fats such as Prima Plus.
Do not use Light food.

Reducing the weight of an OBESE Dog.
Obesity is an illness and can lead to expensive veterinary costs.
Use Husse Light and feed to the recommended rate on the bag.
Obesity can take several weeks to adjust, so weigh constantly and monitor. Do not allow more than 3% of weight loss in any week. Do not feed scraps, treats or wet food.
Remember exercise is good for you and your dog and you and will significantly increase weight loss and fitness. When target weight approached or achieved, consider using a lighter food such as Prima Plus. If your dog is aging, use Husse Senior or Husse Light as a maintenance food.
